Actually, I had this question myself... might seem silly to those to whom breeding is a yearly event, but to those who don't or haven't, how does one tell if a tie has taken? Guess you could take her in to the vet and do one of those pregnancy tests, but at the same time are there any signs so one can tell when or if a person should begin preparing for pups so to speak.

Yea you should prepare for pups when you do the breeding.

Okay, maybe I should have said prepare the bitch for the arrival... probably when she starts showin it'd be time to add to her food intake and cut back on exercise huh? Guess all you can do is stick em and wait for her to start showing and if after two months she don't drop none you can consider that particular breeding a bust.
We get x-rays around day 40. That gives you a clue on how many to expect and still gives you 23 days to prepare for the pups if you haven't already.
Don't get why people post comments if they don't have anything helpful to add. I guess when you know everything ( or think you do), you chastise rather than help.

X rays SHOULD be taken after 45 days. Any sooner you may not see the puppies. Due to the bones not fully forming to be visiable on Radiograph. Now you can get an ultrasound on ay 30. But it is harder to get an accurate count.
You can also do a witness relaxin blood test anytime after 30 days. I have done them before to verify pregnancy.
And the whole 63 days is not written in stone. Due to when the actual LH surge is. When you are breeding naturally and not doing a progesterone test it is harder to pinpoint an actual date. It can range anywhere between 60-72 days from what I have seen.
I have had a bitch go 71 days. I have had a bitch go 67 days.

My dog is supposed to have her first litter tomorrow, it'll be her 63rd day, but I don't think she's pregnant really, she got very lazy around 3-4 weeks and hasn't been interested in exercise at all, but she looks very much the same as before she was pregnant :(

on average you can tell if a bitch is pregnant by visual appearance at about 6 weeks. Sometimes earlier if it is a big litter and sometimes not until she gives birth if there are only one or two. I never really saw the point in doing an x-ray if you have to wait until approximately 6 weeks anyway. I guess if you were taking deposits on pups you might want to know how many there are. I never bred to sell so waiting till they were born wasn't a problem.

Has the search feature gotten better than it was? Cause back in the day it sucked.

Yea, she's been in there for 2 weeks or so now, she likes it I think. It has 4" of insulation underneath it aswell as 1" of chipboard and then wood chips on top of that ;)

Some people like to know the number so it is easier to tell when the bitch is done. I myself get them. That wa I do not have to worry about it.

Don't cut back on a pregnant bitch's exercise. Unless you're milling her for 3 hours a day and doing chain drags then yes cut back but you want to keep her as fit as possible.

You can't just keep with the same exercise right up until she drops can you? That would be like a pregnant female jogger tryna jog the same distance and speed throughout her pregnancy wouldn't it? Don't you have to slow down at least a bit sometime during the bitch's (four legged one haha) pregnancy?
Cynthia

Keep her healthy. But she should be healthy and fit before you breed her. Not conditioned, but healthy. You can take her on daily walks up until the last 3 weeks of the pregnancy. But not intensive exercise.
We get the xrays so if they tell me 5 pups, I expect 5 pups to be born. If I got 4 on the ground and she's not producing the 5th I know she needs more help than I can give her. Don't make sence to take a deposit for pups off an xray when you never know if all will survive. But I could see how people would do that.

I just have to ask,....who decides what's a stupid question and what isn't?
Now, I know some questions are way the hell out there and don't deserve the bandwidth they're taking up,....but, if folks don't ask questions,...what is the site for? Is it just for a few folks to tell each other "nice breeding" or "nice ped" every few days?
I get the whole "do your research" thing, but suppose folks don't know all of the questions to ask or where to ask them,...why not just put up some of the info you have and let folks get more educated. Seriously, the same five balls-scratching topics redux gets a bit tiresome. If some want to keep a private knowledge club, why not just put up an honest notice on the home page of the site saying, "Notice, if you're green, or don't know shit, don't expect to get any info here, because we know it all and don't care to let you in on the secret." Everyone who asks a less-than-informed question isn't a dumbass out to breed a litter; and every "expert" and "dog-man" on here isn't the knowledgeable stand-up individual they pretend to be............or get props for being...........now are they? Keep it real folks. The way I see it, if that dog has already been bred,...there's nothing any internet breed-guardian can do to make the dog pregnant or not, and hell a point in the right direction could help prevent bigger mistakes down the road. And, thanks to those who took a minute to inform instead of flip folks off and power-trip. Oh,....as for the "use the search button" retort,......you try using it to find out about something besides TG and tell me how it really goes for you. Hell, at least the Google poster wasn't too far off,....I find more specific help/posts on this board by using Google than I do from using the board's own search function. What does that tell ya about the mighty "search function"?
