Charlottetown,Prince Edward Island, Canada -- The chair of Summerside's police committee thinks the city should ban pit bulls.
Councillor Garth Lyle admits there'll be a backlash from some dog owners. However, he wants to be proactive, and prevent a serious dog attack.
"What we are looking for is to protect the public from vicious animals. I don't really think we want to have this type of vicious dog in our community."
Lyle said that if there's no ban the owners may have to observe extra rules .
"I think a lot could be done to protect the citizens by a matter of banning the breed. Or some of the other municipalities across Canada have asked the owners to put up as much as 500 dollars I believe in licensing and also to carry liability insurance in case of an attack."
* INDEPTH: Banning the breed
Councillor Paul Power said specific breeds should be included in the proposed bylaw.
The city is researching other municipal dog breed bans from across the country, and a report is expected back to council in March.
