TEWKSBURY TWP. — A public hearing on a proposed ordinance that updates the regulations regarding “vicious” dogs was adjourned until Tuesday, March 9.
The hearing began on Feb. 23 but some questions were raised that required some research by the township attorney.
Under the proposed rules, the municipal court shall declare a dog vicious if it finds evidence that the dog killed a person or caused serious bodily injury or engaged in dog fighting without being provoked.
The court could declare a dog to be “potentially dangerous” if it finds that the dog caused bodily injury during an unprovoked attack and poses a serious threat of bodily injury or death to a person, or severely injured or killed another domestic animal; or poses a threat of serious bodily injury or death to a person or other domestic animal.
Dogs declared to be vicious would be euthanized while owners of “potentially dangerous” dogs would have to comply with various conditions including getting a special $700 license.
The hearing will be during the Township Committee meeting in the Mountainville meeting hall on Water Street beginning at 7:30 p.m.
