rabies....true or not????

i have been reading up on rabies...i know in all 50 states it is required to have the vac.. but what i have read is that some vets say that a rabie shot is good for three yrs but because of vets wanting more money they got the law past to do it every yrs.....is this true or not....i would like to know more....

Yes, some vets are a joke.. if a shot is good for 3 years, it is good for 3 years.... my vet tried to do the same damn thing to me... sayed it was a "precaution"...?? I do all my shots at home now... they need a rabies as a pup, that will be good for one year... then another that will be good for 3 years... and 3 years later, another that will be good for another 3 years.... (they are not even 100% sure if the vac. will always prevent the animal from getting rabies... its something like a 50/50, but dont quote me on that...)

GrChPit***** you are right in saying a 50/50 chance. That is IF your dog is up to date on its Rabies vax. That is why it is recommended for them to get a booster if they come in contact with a possible Rabies case. It is the same for people.
From what I have read at home rabies vaccines don't really count when it comes down to it. In those states where owners can legally acquire the vaccine, goverment agencies in those state will not recognize them (owner done rabies vax) if the owners animal bites someone.
A there are actually 2 types of Rabies vaccines on the market. One is only approved for cats at this point, but this one is good for only 1 year, but it decreases the chance of certain cancers and autoimmune diseases caused by the other 3yr Rabies vax.
Once a dog or cat gets its first 3yr Rabies vaccine it is possible for the animals body to have a high titer level still several years after getting the one 3yr vaccine. A titer level can actually be drawn to see if the animal still has enough resistance to the virus and if the animal does the vaccine can be with held. The main problem with this is that a titer level costs more than getting a vaccine.
As far as having your dog vaccinated every year that is a bit much and not needed.

DORA lets be real for a second. Why would you vaccinate your dog every year just because the law says. Do you think that they are going to come knocking on your door to ask you why they haven't been? NO. You can get away with it very 3 years so why not just do it that way. Haven't you learned the rule in not to OVER VACCINATE YOUR ANIMALS!

I give my own rabies shots and I've never been questioned by my county when I go get the annual licenses .. If the dogs have a 3 year rabies shot, the county doesnt require me to go out and get a vaccine every year in order to license the dogs, the rabies shot is good for 3 years in their eyes.

Oh I was gonna say. Don't over vaccinate your dogs, cuz people that take their dogs to the vet every year for vaccinations is rediculous. At least to me it is.

Well Ive Had The Police Come Just To Check The Rabies Tags And Living Cond, And They Came On Christmas Lmao,in The Dark,but They Told Me If I Didnt Have All My Rabies Up To Date (1 A Yr)they Were Gonna Take My Dogs,

in our county we are checked yearly and if you do not have them current, they will take the dogs immediately and hold them until you are able to pay them for giving the shots and boarding, which gets very expensive very quickly, it is well worth having the shots done yearly by my veterinarian. we simply have no choice in the matter, that is why we are currently looking for a new home in another area.

I just recently moved from New York State( I am now in Arizona). I know that NY has the 2nd highest rabies problem in the country, Texas is the 1st.
I am not sure what the Rabies laws are exactly in other states, but as I stated earlier over vaccinating your dog is increasing its risk of developing cancers and auto immune diseases. As the vet what Rabies Vax he/she is using. Like I said there is a 1yr RV, BUT for cats only!! If your vet and law makers are trying to get you to get a RV every I would make a huge fuss about it. A vet. should know that it is not in your dogs best interest.

Where we live you can get the 1 or three year shot, but must get a new rabies tag every year. But 99% of the vets and Animal control officers around here will not tell ya about the 3 yr. vac. and will get funny if you mention it. It's all about bringing in revenue to line their pockets. Any good vet will tell ya over-vaccination is detriental to your pets health.

don't know if anyone has said this already but here in Ca. The law is 1 rabbies shot at 4 months old and one a year later that's good for 3 years. Then evert 3 years to the date.

When I lived in KS we had to move out of one town (that had a ban on APBT's )to a smaller town just outside the first after repeated warnings about our dogs.. The sheriffs patroled both areas and came once a year to check everything and try everything possible to take our dogs. Of course the SPCA was along for the ride and inspected each of our animals as well. Rabies vac. was the first thing they looked at and it had to be once a year.
Now that I have moved i dont worry about. once every 3 is fine for me
