I know that this is gross, but I'm going nuts here. I have a dog that is determined to eat her feces. I know that there can be several reasons why stemming from nutrition to boredom to just wanting to be disgusting. She was a living skeleton when she was taken in a drug raid at about 4 mo. of age & while being "watched" on the property she would eat her feces & those of other dogs. Well, now that she is nice & healthy (10 mo. of age), she still eats her poop. Most of me thinks it is now just a habit, but what do I do? She does not eat the other dogs, just hers. I scoop my yard about 4 times a day. I've tried several homemade "remedies" & several items that are sold at my clinic to get the dog to quit. I know that I'm not the only one out there whose dog has this gross habit, so I would love any input that y'all have. P.S.--I've tried all types of food from Pro Plan to Canidae to Nutro (which is what I'm currently feeding & she looks & acts great)

I have a dog that used to have this problem also but would only eat other dogs crap.I tried a few home remedies(tobasco sauce) nothing really help, then he just stop one day and hasn't done it since.nothing worse than when your dog trys to lick your face and all you can smell is crap.

lol...my Bosco does that from time to time too. It's actually just an old instinct that some dogs still have from living in the wild. They'll eat their waste (and that of other dogs too) to "cover their tracks" (though it's not too difficult to find a dog who is on a chain). Gross, but not really something to worry about aside from the smelly kisses.

have you taken her to a vet? Maybe She'll grow out of it. Good-luck

I have a female who only does that when I have confined her to a space for too long, she is just keeping her space clean.
But sometimes dogs don't complete digest their food and they still have food in their stool so they eat it, especially if you give them raw meat
A dog that has the run of the entire yard doesn't usually do that

You need to clean it up ASAP ..theres also stuff you can buy that you put in the dogs food and its supposed to make the stool "unpleasant" (ok..LOL..it already is unpleasant!)
for years it was assumed that dogs did this (ITs called Coprophagia) because of a low protien diet or not enough food.. But it could also be out of boredom (pups will sometimes play with it)
Sometimes changing a dogs diet and feeding twice to three times a day will help. Also get the dog a check up if you havent so already.
if the dog is young, sometimes they will grow out of it. But best thing is to just clean it up ASAP and not givethe dog a chance to eat it..if at all possible
When we first got our puppy she did this. I picked up some Deter and after about 3 weeks she stopped.

I scoop my yards 3-4 times a day & ALWAYS after 1 of them poops. My neighbors get a kick out of me yelling & running with the shovel to beat Sukari to it!
My dogs are kept in kennels in my house for 8 hrs at the longest. They eat 2 times a day & are rotated in & out of the yard until about midnight before all are "put to bed". I'm thinking it's boredom & I think it's even a game to her to see whose faster: her for pooping & then turning to eat it or me running at her with the shovel. She's deaf, so yelling doesn't help. I have started walking her in the front yard to do her business so she doesn't go in the backyard & still picking up after all the other 9 dogs go.
As I am a cert. Vet Tech, I & one of the vets have done all the medical testing possible to find something deficient with her. She's just 10 months, so I gues I'm just going to hope that it's something she grows out of.
I was just hoping that someone out there might have used something or done something that I haven't thought of.

Sprinkle some "meat tenderizer" on her kibble.

It just then sounds like it was a learned habit and she will just have to unlearn it. putting stuff on the poop usually doesnt work since most dogs will develop a taste for that, too...
Try teaching her to go on a plastic bag (so you can grab it quickly without having to fumble scooping) or use the method blind people do when scooping up after their seeing eye dogs..
they run their hand down the back of the dog so they know where to pick up the stool.. asap since they cant see and as soon as the dog goes they can scoop it up
(yes..this method is actually taught to them and the dog during training)

I have started walking her in the front to do business, so I'm hoping that it will end. As like you, I beleive that it is more of a behavioral/learned thing, but I am going to do a combo thing. The leash work & stuff on food. It's just so hard to have to "babysit" 1 dog when I have 9 others. But I love her, & she had a hard enough start in life, so she's mine till the end. Thanks everyone for your help!! (additional responses will still be appreciated) :)

I know how gross it can be. Our first family dog was a pervert. I say this because of the many things he did such as he HAS to urinate in his fresh water before he will drink it, eats his feces, and will ONLY hump male dogs(no need in neutering him HAHA). I suspect its because he was from a puppy mill and is severly inbred which caused health problems too (very frequent seizures and depression). Not saying that your dog was inbred in anyway just saying that I know where your coming from and how gross it is.
I'm having the same problem with my pup, tried the meat tenderizer, didnt work. I cant watch him all day, because of work. Just wondering if anybody had any other suggestions. I feed canidae, so I doubt its the lack of nutrients. He walks 2 miles a day, just about everyday, and when we dont do that he plays fetch very well, for at least an hour or 2. He just started doing this, for about 2 wks now.(hes 4 mths, and a nicely bred dog) any suggestions would be appreciated, before I spend the money at the vet.

All my dogs are now on DVP's Natural Balance & she still eats her poo (& anyone else's she can get ahold of). I've just accepted the fact that she likes it as many, many, many dogs eat cat poo, horse poo, cow poo, etc. & there is nothing wrong with them, so.........
My advice is to not allow facial "kisses" anymore. ;)

I had a dog who did that and all i did was sprinkle some meat tenderizer on the kibble and after about 1 week he stoped....but you have heard that, this is just another backing to it. I hope all goes well.

Solid gold makes a natural product called SEP (stop eating poop). Its suposed to work well and I imagine you could get a refund if it didn't, they are a good company. There is also another product, I forget the name, but many pet stores carry the brand. The company makes many products, a lot of dewormers. Its in a blue package. If I see it at the pet store I will let ya know.
But I know how you feel. At my work there is 18 shelties and most of them eat poop. Mind you they are in groups but I get a laugh out of chasing 8 shelties to be the first to get to the poop :P "Don't eat it!!" haha.

Dont know if youve tried this or not but if not: try giving her a few chunks of pineapple.
Ive had probs with this (and a friend of mine had a poodle that ate other dogs stool as well as his own) and after a few days of pineapple he stopped.
From what I was told (by the person that told me about it) the acid in the pineapple changes the acidity of the stool. And it isnt as appetizing anymore.

i would think walk her around the yard till she does her business..lock her up..put something on the poop its self..pepper,dog repelant.ect.then release her and let her take a whack at it..it has to be something she cant stand..but after eating poop i dont know.

We had one, we were doing the meat tenderizer, the vet said DON'T, it is too high in sodium, he said to get Halls Cough Drops, just the plain ones, no flavor, we got the sugar free and it worked. We gave her one a day for about a week, gave it to her like a pill, and she quit. We quit giving her the cough drops a couple of weeks later and she hasn't went back to it. Don't know why Halls Cough Drops would work other than they are really nasty tasting!

I've heard of the meat tenderizer thing, hope that helps.
Ugh, the worst is when a dog eats feces and then barfs it up! The worst combination of smells! All the dogs I know who eat poop (from puppy mills) still do despite what the owners do. Sometimes they are good and just stop doing it, but every now and then they forget how much they love it and go for it again. It's like an addiction!

okay, what if one of my pups eats it as it's coming out of another dog? does this still qualify as the same? or is she just completely nasty

Buck treats the woods as a crap buffet. He is always eating something terrible. I used to scold him for eating crap but now I just let him eat it. It is something that is difficult for me to catch and therefore it is impossible to train it out of him. It doesn't make him sick, so no big deal.
At least he doesn't eat his own.
Cat droppings stink something terrible though.

lmao
so they just clean their kennels by themselves, damn, i wish they had been trained sooner to do that
Thanks everyone, for all the suggestions. Right now I'm feeding twice a day. once in the morning, and once in the evening. Think I'll try feeding once a day now, in the late afternoon, when I get home from work. Maybe I can catch him before he goes for it. I think it may be from boredom during the day, when I'm at work. I keep plenty of toys out there for him, I guess hes just a nasty ole dog. Anyways, again thanks for all the suggestions. I'm sure I might need them.
