Hello there!

I don't know if this ended up to the right forum but ...
Do you have any good yard tips that I could put up on my web site? Simple but proven ones would be great. Similar to those on http://www.dunkelkennels.com/yardtips.html

Thanks in advance!

Heres a couple tips...

Add sulmet to your dogs, especially pups water once a month. We start our pups on it as soon as they are weaned off of their momma. It will help prevent coccidia.

Add salt to your dogs chain spaces, it will help with flea control by killing flea larvae, both of these ideas can be found at your local feed store...

Two things....

What is sulmet? And what type of salt? Are you talking the kind of salt you put on icy walks to get rid of the ice or are you talking about the type of salt that you eat or what? Because I live in town and am surrounded by idiots I always end up with fleas in my yard every year. I put cedar shavings in the dog houses but haven't been able to totally get rid of them.

The salt I am talking about comes in 50lb bags at most feed stores. The Sulmet can also be purchased there as well. Sulmet is 12.5% sulfamethazine sodium, the same ingredient as albon. Its an antibacterial and made by Fort Dodge. Hope this helps.

The thing about the salt is it won't kill the live fleas...but it will kill the flea larvae, it is best to put it down early spring, before they are hatching like nuts. Luckily for us, we've never had a flea problem as it is, but this is a preventive. If I were you, I'd still put the salt down, as it will stop new fleas, and then concentrate on the current fleas.

Have you tried permethin? I believe it helps fleas as well, its definately good for ticks. What we buy is sold under the name DURVET at the feed store. Its an oil based concentrate and we find it works pretty damn good. Its safe to spray the yard and the dog with the same stuff. Add about an ounce of rubbing alcohol to the permethin mix, and it will give the mixture a faster kill when applied.

I've currently got cedar shavings in the dog houses. I'll get some as soon as I can and put it down. Do you keep putting it down through out the spring/summer? Or do you do it just the once?

Cool. Thanks again! I'll for sure look for this stuff as well.

Now what about for IN my house? I've got all sorts of little critters for pets as well and don't want to use anything that will harm them.

Now what about for IN my house? I've got all sorts of little critters for pets as well and don't want to use anything that will harm them. You only need to put the salt down once, twice if you like per year, the best time is the end of winter/early spring...if you do it now, maybe I'd do it twice...now and then maybe again in 3-4mos to get any new larvae.
The Permethin is safe to use on dogs...so I would ***ume it would be ok for the other pets, but don't take that as gospel. I've sprayed it on myself when I go out to the thick wood and clear out stuff...and I'm still alive :-D

What about like spraying it on people beds in the house? Last year we ended up with fleas so bad around here that we kept finding them IN OUR bed! Nothing ****s worse than waking up with flea bites on your legs!!

I dunno if I would spray it in my house, it kinda stinks lol and its an oil base so it will get on everything and be kinda nasty.
Start working outside to kill the fleas, then go out for a day and flea bomb the house, would be my suggestion.

Ok so spraying it in the house is out of the question LOL. Not sure about being able to bomb the house though. We've got fish aquariums with fish (4 to be exact) plus 5 snake cages, a bird, 5 cages of hamsters, 3 cages of gerbils and 5 cages of rats. That would be a whole lot to try to remove from the house. That's why I'm trying to find a way around having to try to do that. It would take a whole day just to remove all those cages and put them some where safe LOL

What about a flea powder for things in the house?? You tried that perhaps? I dunno how much it would help, or how much of a mess it would be, but they make odor powders for carpets...why not sprinkle some flea powder into the carpets??? I think Adams makes some good flea powder...
