I did a search on here and didnt find much, so... I was wondering what a lot of you all use to put in or around your dogs chain area. I have tried cedar mulch and it works well at keeping bugs away, and helps the dogs smell a little better, but it stinks when wet and they throw it everywhere. Its really quite messy. Its also very dusty and dry so their eyes and ears are getting irratated. Any ideas on what I can use? Thanks in advance!

shon and marty have stuff on there chain spots to limit dust..i cant remember what they use....as far as bugs...i use seven dust 10% ( cover ur mouth and nose ) and keep ya dog from the spot till ya wet it a tad bit... it doesnt hurt the dog...but the dust off it isnt good for there lungs that why u dampin it :) ... use lime for smell... again cover ya mouth and nose and move ya dog till ya dampin it... NOT soak... just damp to keep the dust down they will wear it in with there chain ...

My yard is clay mostly, I run the airiator over the lawn and put hydrated lyme down and then spray it with my hose with a spray attachment full of industreal Clorox. gets it deep in the soil and kills all the nasties. As far as keeping dust down you wet it down every day to keep it compacted or use some form of envioronmentally safe oil of some sort. What about pea gravel or river stone.

Search for quarry dust. in the forums search. I found Marty's post about it, but cannot transfer the link as I am a computer retard...(sometimes). Apparently it is not all that expensive, you can wet it down if it gets dusty...
You might want to search through Suki's psts aboput using sevin dust for pests. Not a good idea as it is toxic to dogs. There are a zillion old posts about that too. Also apparently lime is toxic to dogs so you got to move the dogs, use it, wet the area down good as you don't want to hurt your dogs, chain them over caustic material...etc. So make sure you are careful when using this stuff. This is not to imply that it cannot be used, just be careful to apply it correctly so you don't endanger the dogs...or yourself...

add sand... it keeps chain spots dry, dogs clean and out of the mud.

I have moved their chain spot, but cannot keep doing that as I do enjoy having grass in my yard..lol! I never thought of sand, hell that would suit me fine and it's cheap! Sevin is a tad to dangerous for me to use around my dogs, but those of you who do and would like a safer alternative, their is a dust called Bayer Complete Insect Killer at Lowe's. You can put this directly onto the animal if you'd like. Thanks for your help everyone!
